Eritrea President Isaias Afwerki Returns Home After Successful Visit to China

Asmara, Eritrea – President Isaias Afwerki returned to Eritrea early this morning, concluding a significant working visit to the People’s Republic of China. The President arrived at 1 a.m. after attending the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), which took place in Beijing from September 4 to 6.

The President’s trip was made at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, with the primary focus on strengthening Eritrea’s relationship with China. During the visit, President Isaias held extensive talks with both President Xi and Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The discussions centered on enhancing bilateral ties, as well as addressing a variety of mutual interests, ranging from economic cooperation to infrastructure development.

In addition to his discussions with Chinese officials, President Isaias Afwerki also held meetings with regional leaders attending FOCAC, including President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan and General Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council. The conversations focused on regional peace, security, and development initiatives.

Eritrea’s delegation, which accompanied the President, included Foreign Minister Osman Saleh. The delegation’s participation in the forum underlined Eritrea’s commitment to fostering deeper collaboration with China and other African nations.

The trip is seen as a successful step in bolstering Eritrea’s foreign relations and advancing cooperative projects with international partners, particularly within the context of the Africa-China partnership.

The 9th FOCAC summit was an essential platform for African leaders to engage with China on key developmental initiatives, including infrastructure, trade, and digital transformation. Eritrea’s involvement highlighted the country’s strategic role in the region and its desire to further integrate into global development efforts.
