KINGSTON, JAMAICA – October 1, 2025 — Prime Minister Andrew Holness has reaffirmed the Jamaican diaspora’s crucial role in national development, describing Jamaicans abroad as essential partners in building a stronger, more resilient country. In a series of messages shared via X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the diaspora’s historic and ongoing contributions—while outlining specific areas where their impact can grow even further.

“The Jamaican diaspora is a vital part of our nation’s story,” Holness said. “Your achievements, influence, and contributions strengthen Jamaica’s standing globally.”

From business and academia to philanthropy and cultural pride, the diaspora’s presence in countries like the United States, Canada, and the UK continues to elevate Jamaica’s image and create new opportunities for national progress.

A Shared Mission: Democracy, Development, and Global Impact

Holness highlighted how Jamaicans abroad help shape not only the countries they reside in, but also Jamaica’s global reputation as a nation of excellence, resilience, and innovation.

“Every effort—through investment, philanthropy, knowledge sharing, or simply waving the flag proudly—helps shape the Jamaica we are building together.”

He thanked the diaspora for their ongoing commitment to Jamaican democracy and emphasized that the nation’s progress is a shared success.

Jamaica’s progress is their progress, and together we will ensure that our country stands strong and independent on the world stage.”

Economic Growth and the Expanding Role of the Diaspora

In a follow-up statement, Prime Minister Holness outlined a forward-looking strategy for increasing diaspora engagement, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, and innovation.

“As Jamaica strengthens its economy, the diaspora’s role will expand even further.”

He identified three pillars of this vision:

  1. Export Market – The diaspora is a ready-made global market for Jamaican goods and services, offering continued support for local producers.

  2. Investment – Holness encouraged more targeted diaspora investment, not just in real estate, but also in Jamaica’s stock market, infrastructure, energy, and agriculture sectors.

  3. Entrepreneurship and Innovation – He emphasized the importance of diaspora-led innovation and business collaboration, with potential to unlock new industries and create long-term jobs.

Bridging Skills and Expertise in a Modern Economy

As Jamaica experiences economic growth and record-low unemployment, Holness also underscored the need for high-level skills—especially in areas like technology and artificial intelligence—where the diaspora can play a transformative role.

“We will need high-level expertise… particularly in areas such as technology and artificial intelligence, where our diaspora can make a major impact.”

The statements align with Jamaica’s broader economic goals and the government’s continuing efforts to integrate diaspora leadership into national development through policy and targeted engagement.

A Shared Mission of National Development

Describing the diaspora’s role as central to Jamaica’s long-term vision, Holness emphasized the importance of their continued involvement in the nation’s future.

Jamaica’s progress is their progress,” he said. “Together we will ensure that our country stands strong and independent on the world stage.”

The message aligns with ongoing initiatives by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, which has been strengthening ties with the Jamaican diaspora through structured engagement, economic partnerships, and national development programs. The Prime Minister’s statement also comes amid global observances of Jamaica Diaspora Day and broader conversations on how best to harness the skills and influence of Jamaicans abroad.
