Hoima, Uganda  – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, alongside First Lady Janet Museveni, inspected ongoing construction work at Hoima Stadium on Tuesday evening, reaffirming the government’s commitment to delivering key infrastructure projects ahead of Uganda’s hosting of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Initially, plans were set for the development of Akii-Bua Stadium in Lira for historical reasons. However, after Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania’s joint bid for AFCON 2027 was successful, the decision was made to prioritize Hoima due to its strategic location and the presence of a developing airport.

Museveni took to social media following the inspection, stating, “For historical reasons, we initially planned to develop Akii-Bua Stadium before others. However, after our bid for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was successful, we made a case for the Hoima location. This decision was influenced by the presence of an airport in the area, which we had already begun working on.”

The construction of Hoima Stadium is seen as a key step in Uganda’s preparation for the continental tournament, with the government investing heavily in sports and transport infrastructure to meet international standards. The Hoima International Airport, which is under development, is expected to enhance connectivity and attract visitors, bolstering the region’s economy.

Museveni also urged the private sector to play an active role in complementing these efforts, encouraging investments in hotels and other amenities to accommodate visitors. “I would like to congratulate the people of Hoima on these significant infrastructure improvements that will boost the local economy,” he said.

Uganda’s preparations for AFCON 2027 come with high expectations, as the East African nation seeks to deliver a world-class tournament. The tournament, co-hosted with Kenya and Tanzania, will be the first AFCON held in the region in over four decades, marking a major milestone for East African football.

As stadium construction progresses, government officials and stakeholders continue to push for timely completion to ensure Uganda is ready to welcome the continent’s best teams in 2027.
