NAKASONGOLA, Uganda — On May 22, 2025, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni commissioned the Pura Organic Agro Tech Limited cassava processing factory in Kiramata village, Nakasongola District. This $5 million facility aims to reduce Uganda’s reliance on imported starch, particularly for the pharmaceutical industry.
President Museveni emphasized the importance of local cassava starch production in lowering medicine costs, noting that imported starch from countries like India contributes to high pharmaceutical expenses. He commended Ugandan cassava outgrowers for embracing this opportunity and encouraged local processors to explore indigenous nutritious food varieties to add value.
On my way to address a public rally in Nakasongola town, I stopped to commission Pura Organic Agro Tech Limited, a cassava processing factory. However, the President expressed disappointment over acts of vandalism targeting electricity infrastructure, which have led to power outages affecting such investments. He assured that the government would address these challenges to ensure the success of industrial projects like the Pura factory.
Pura Organic Agro Tech Ltd, incorporated in 2011, has been developing its nucleus farm and expanding cassava cultivation in collaboration with smallholder farmers. The company received a $2.5 million investment from the Yield Uganda Investment Fund, managed by Pearl Capital Partners, to establish the processing plant. The facility is designed to produce high-quality cassava flour, tapioca starch, and sago, serving both local and export markets.
This development aligns with Uganda’s broader strategy to promote import substitution and value addition in agriculture, aiming to enhance food security and economic growth.
