Transformative Change Ahead: Canada’s Black Justice Strategy Unveiled

Toronto – The Honourable Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, has heralded a landmark moment in Canadian justice with the release of the external Steering Group’s Report: A Roadmap for Transformative Change: Canada’s Black Justice Strategy. This significant document outlines a comprehensive plan to combat systemic racism and discrimination within the country’s criminal justice system, particularly impacting Black communities.

The report, crafted through an intersectional, anti-Black racism, and anti-oppression lens, addresses longstanding disparities that have led to the overrepresentation of Black individuals as both victims and offenders in Canada’s justice system. It encompasses 114 actionable recommendations designed to dismantle systemic barriers and promote equity.

In response to these recommendations, Justice Canada is preparing a detailed government response plan, which will outline specific measures to be implemented. These initiatives aim to foster a fairer and more inclusive justice system that confronts systemic racism head-on, while creating opportunities for marginalized communities to thrive.

Minister Arif Virani expressed his appreciation for the Steering Group’s efforts, highlighting the report as a historic roadmap for policy reform and legislative action:

“I welcome the Report and am pleased to share it publicly, given its importance in guiding the work ahead, with our partners. They have given us a history-making report that lays the groundwork for policies, programs, and legislation that will help build a fairer, more effective justice system, confront systemic anti-Black racism, and address the disparities that limit opportunities for Black people in our justice system.”
