TD JerkFest Toronto 2024: A Celebration of Community, Culture, and Cuisine

Written by on August 10, 2024

Toronto, ON — The TD International Jerk Food and Music Festival (TD JerkFest) has once again kicked off, bringing with it the rich flavors, rhythms, and spirit of the Caribbean to Toronto’s Centennial Park. From August 9th to 11th, attendees will be treated to a vibrant showcase of jerk cuisine, music, art, and community spirit, marking a significant highlight in the city’s cultural calendar.

Anthony Plummer, Founder and Executive Director of Caribbean Promotions Arts and Culture Inc., highlighted the festival’s deep-rooted commitment to community engagement, stating, “JerkFest has always been about more than just food and music. We love to give back to the community.” This year, the festival expands its outreach with the introduction of the JerkFest Cares Grocery Grab, a unique initiative that blends philanthropy with festivity.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, festival-goers who donate three non-perishable food items to the Afri-Can Food Basket and Regeneration Marketplace can enter the park at a discounted rate—$4.99 for adults and $2.00 for children aged 7-12. In addition to contributing to these essential community resources, donors will be entered into a draw to win a $25 grocery gift card. The grand prize, a highlight of the festival’s charity efforts, offers one lucky winner a timed shopping spree in a grocery store, valued at up to $1,300.

The entertainment lineup is as diverse and exciting as the festival itself. Friday night features a performance by the rising dancehall star Masicka. The festivities continue on Saturday and Sunday with the dynamic sounds of dancehall artist Ding Dong, Reggae Queen Marcia Griffiths, and Soca Star Farmer Nappy. Adding to the musical celebration, winners of the Show Your Flow contest will perform in categories including R&B, reggae, soca, dancehall, and hip-hop.

A culinary journey wouldn’t be complete without expert guidance. Thanks to DoorDash Canada, this year’s official sponsor, the #BlackFoodEnergy Demo Tent will host chefs Leon Rowe and Nicole King. With demonstrations at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, these culinary maestros will guide attendees through the art of Caribbean cooking, offering free samples to the first 50 participants.

Chef Leon Rowe, the visionary behind Heaven’s Kitchen, and Chef Nicole King of MsKingsKitchen will not only share their culinary expertise but also underscore the importance of healthy and inspired cooking. Their participation is part of DoorDash Canada’s #BlackFoodEnergy program, which aims to celebrate and amplify the talents of Black chefs and Black-owned restaurants.

The TD JerkFest is made possible by the generous support of the TD Bank Group, through its TD Ready Commitment platform, demonstrating a shared vision for fostering cultural pride and community resilience.

As the TD JerkFest unfolds, it stands as a testament to the power of food and music to unite communities, celebrate cultural heritage, and inspire generosity. With its fusion of flavors, sounds, and community spirit, the festival continues to be a beacon of Caribbean culture in Toronto.
