Toronto, ON – The Little Jamaica Festival lit up Toronto’s York-Eglinton neighborhood this past weekend, July 13th-14th, with a vibrant celebration of Jamaican and Caribbean culture. The festival, which played a crucial role in supporting local businesses impacted by prolonged LRT construction and gentrification, saw an incredible turnout, culminating in a spectacular performance by reggae superstar Tarrus Riley.
Renowned for his hit songs like “She’s Royal” and collaborations with artists such as Major Lazer, Ellie Goulding, and Shenseea, Riley’s performance was the highlight of the festival. His soulful voice and engaging stage presence captivated the audience, bringing the essence of Jamaica to the heart of Toronto’s “Little Jamaica.”
“The Little Jamaica Festival is unique and special because it celebrates the rich cultural heritage and vibrant community spirit of the area,” said York-Eglinton BIA chair Jason McDonald. “The festival highlights the distinct Jamaican culture through music, dance, food, and art, providing a platform for local artists and businesses to showcase their talents and offerings. It brings together people from all walks of life to celebrate diversity, fostering a sense of belonging and pride in our neighborhood. By celebrating our heritage and supporting our local businesses, we are actively working to preserve the vitality of our incredible neighborhood!”
Joining Tarrus Riley on stage were five-time JUNO Award-winner Exco Levi with The High Priest Band, Freedom Mas Band—the first Jamaican Mas Band in the Toronto Caribbean Carnival—JUNO-nominated dancehall artist Eyesus, and the Majestic Warriors Band. The festival also featured an impressive lineup of reggae and dancehall DJs, including Canada’s Reggae Ambassador SPEX DA BOSS, Steenie, Tasha Rozez, and DJ Wayne.
The family-friendly event included dozens of cultural food vendors, a Kids Zone with games and craft activities, and a lively atmosphere that celebrated the unique cultural tapestry of the area. Attendees enjoyed a variety of traditional Caribbean dishes, local crafts, and interactive activities that engaged both children and adults.
The Little Jamaica Festival stood as a testament to the enduring spirit and cultural richness of the neighborhood, providing a much-needed boost to the community and local economy. As the sounds of reggae and dancehall filled the air, and the flavors of Caribbean cuisine delighted festival-goers, the weekend highlighted the resilience and vibrancy of Little Jamaica.
