Kingston, Jamaica — In a bold statement reaffirming the Jamaican government’s resolve to dismantle gangs and protect its citizens, Prime Minister Andrew Holness emphasized his administration’s dedication to combating crime without infringing on individual rights. Addressing the public via social media on September 9, 2024, Holness highlighted the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) readiness and professionalism in facing this challenge.
“We are fully committed to eliminating gangs from our society without infringing on the rights of our citizens,” the Prime Minister declared. “I assure you that the Jamaica Constabulary Force is trained, equipped, and ready to take on this challenge with professionalism and integrity.”

Holness went on to underscore an often overlooked aspect of the ongoing fight against gangs — the victims of gang violence. “It is crucial that we also recognize and advocate for the victims,” he stated, calling attention to the men, women, and children who have been affected by the criminal activities of gangs across the island. He lamented that too often, the focus of public discourse shifts towards the perpetrators rather than the innocent lives devastated by these violent acts.
“No one is asking about the rights of those who have been murdered, the families who have been torn apart, and the communities that live in constant fear,” Holness said. “As your Prime Minister, I stand with those victims. I will not allow their voices to go unheard.”
Holness reiterated his administration’s commitment to using every available resource to protect law-abiding Jamaicans. He also vowed continued support for the JCF and other security forces as they work to dismantle criminal organizations that have long plagued communities across the island.
The Prime Minister’s firm stance comes at a critical time, as gang-related violence continues to be a major concern for many Jamaicans. Recent efforts to address the issue include the bolstering of law enforcement capabilities, stricter laws, and increased social programs aimed at prevention.
However, Holness’ latest message also serves as a reminder of the human cost of gang violence, urging Jamaicans to not forget the lives that have been torn apart. His administration’s strategy, he assured, will focus on balancing security with human rights, while placing the victims at the center of the conversation.
In the coming months, it is expected that new initiatives will be rolled out to further strengthen Jamaica’s crime-fighting efforts, with a continued emphasis on both upholding the rights of citizens and restoring peace to affected communities.
