Kingston, Jamaica — As Jamaica marks 62 years of Emancipendence, Prime Minister Andrew Holness delivered a heartfelt message emphasizing the importance of reflection, resilience, and celebration. This year’s Emancipendence is uniquely poignant, coinciding with the nation’s athletes competing in the Paris Olympics and the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl’s devastating impact on the southern regions of the island.
In his address, Prime Minister Holness underscored the significance of Emancipendence as a time to reflect on Jamaica’s journey from the enslavement of its forefathers to achieving independence from colonial rule. He noted that the period is not only about looking back but also about prospecting the future with hope and determination.
“Our journey as a nation has been marked by the courage and strength of our forefathers who fought for emancipation and the generations that pursued independence,” Holness said. “It is a time for reflection and prospection, celebrating our achievements and recognizing the work still ahead.”
This year, the celebrations are buoyed by the spirited performance of Jamaican athletes in the Paris Olympics. Their dynamic presence on the global stage has already lifted the national mood, offering a beacon of hope and pride for Jamaicans everywhere.
Realizing 62 years as an independent nation is an accomplishment to pause and reflect on. The Emancipendence period is about our journey as a nation; from the enslavement of our forefathers and the fight for emancipation, to becoming independent of colonial rule.

However, the jubilation is tempered by the recent havoc wreaked by Hurricane Beryl, which devastated the southern parts of the country. Holness expressed his deepest sympathies to those affected and assured that efforts are underway to mobilize the necessary support for rebuilding and recovery.
“Our hearts go out to our brothers and sisters who are affected by Hurricane Beryl,” he stated. “I know it’s hard, and together, we will get through it.”
Amid these challenges, Holness addressed the question of whether celebrations should proceed. He shared insights from Jamaica’s Festival Queens, who believe that in times of difficulty, celebrations play a crucial role in inspiring people and reminding them of their resilience.
“In times of difficulty, people need to feel inspired, people need a reason to celebrate, and people need to be reminded who they are and how resilient they are,” Holness said, echoing the sentiments of the Festival Queens. “We have been through difficulties before, and it is that Jamaican spirit that always got us through.”
Prime Minister Holness called on the Jamaican family to come together, drawing on their collective strength and spirit. He urged them to remember their resilience and to channel their independence spirit into a robust and resilient recovery.
“As we mark the Emancipendence period, let us remember our strength, and let us channel that strong independence spirit into a strong and resilient recovery,” Holness concluded.
As Jamaica celebrates Emancipendence, the message is clear: the nation’s history of overcoming adversity and its unyielding spirit will guide it through current challenges, ensuring a brighter, more resilient future.
