PM Holness Commends St. Catherine North Police for 33% Crime Reduction

SPANISH TOWN, JAMAICA – Prime Minister Andrew Holness has praised the efforts of the St. Catherine North Police Division after learning of a 33.3% reduction in major and serious crimes, describing it as a significant milestone in Jamaica’s national crime reduction efforts.

During my recent visit to the St. Catherine North Police Division, I spoke with Deputy Superintendent Thoms, the Commanding Officer leading the charge in this area.

During his visit to the division, Holness met with Deputy Superintendent Thoms, the Commanding Officer for the area, who provided an overview of the strategies leading to the division’s recent success.

“I commend DSP Thoms and his team for their service, their results, and their ongoing commitment to making this division one where people can truly live, work, and do business in peace,” Holness stated in a post on X.

According to Thoms, the division’s approach has shifted toward targeted and community-based policing, emphasizing precision over blanket enforcement. He likened their efforts to “spearfishing, not net fishing,” a phrase the Prime Minister highlighted as a symbol of strategic, people-focused policing.

Holness was especially encouraged by initiatives to combat violence against women and children, including proactive outreach in schools and community partnerships aimed at long-term crime prevention.

The update comes amid the government’s broader campaign to strengthen public safety across Jamaica by improving law enforcement practices, empowering local divisions, and investing in community resilience.
