Kamina J. Smith Advances Jamaican Foreign Service Institute Initiative

Kingston, Jamaica – Hon. Kamina J. Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, expressed her pride in the development of the Jamaican Foreign Service Institute, aimed at enhancing the country’s diplomatic excellence. During a recent meeting with the new Dean of the Sushma Swaraj Foreign Service Institute of India, Raj Kumar Singh, Smith emphasized the importance of capacity building in the foreign service sector.
The groundwork for this initiative was laid in 2020 when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the esteemed Indian institution. Smith noted that several foundational steps have already been taken toward the realization of the institute, which aims to improve training for both students and educators involved in Jamaica’s foreign service.

“Capacity building is crucial,” said Smith. “The dream of a Jamaican Foreign Service Institute, which embodies the excellence for which our Ministry is well known, is taking shape.”
During the meeting, Smith and Singh discussed collaborative efforts in curriculum development, training programs, and innovative approaches to virtual learning and exchange programs between their respective ministries. This partnership represents a significant stride towards enhancing Jamaica’s foreign service capabilities through international cooperation.
As the initiative progresses, the Jamaican Foreign Service Institute is expected to serve as a hub for developing future diplomats and enhancing Jamaica’s global standing. Smith’s commitment to this vision highlights her dedication to strengthening Jamaica’s foreign relations and building a skilled workforce equipped to navigate the complexities of international diplomacy.
