Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith Meets with Jamaican Diaspora in Canada, Emphasizes Ongoing Collaboration

Toronto, Canada – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, met with members of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council (GJDC) and Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council (GJDYC) in Toronto, Canada, on September 19, 2024. During the visit, Johnson Smith expressed her gratitude for the support and continued efforts of the Jamaican community in Canada.

In a message shared on social media, the Minister highlighted her appreciation for the “longstanding leaders of the Jamaican community” and extended thanks to High Commissioner Marsha Coore-Lobban and Consul General Kurt Davis for their work in engaging and supporting the diaspora. Johnson Smith noted that these efforts remain crucial as the Jamaican community in Canada undergoes demographic changes and evolving needs.

The discussions covered a range of issues, including the successful outcomes of the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference held in June, responses to post-Tropical Storm Beryl recovery efforts, and how to further optimize the work of sector leaders and the councils in serving the Jamaican diaspora.

“There is more to be done ahead of the next virtual meeting,” Johnson Smith stated, emphasizing that while virtual engagement has been beneficial, “nothing beats face-to-face” interactions. The Minister also expressed her admiration for the dedication of diaspora members, who she said “carry Jamaica in their hearts and are always thinking beyond self.”

The meeting underscored the importance of ongoing collaboration between Jamaica and its diaspora, as leaders and community members continue to work toward addressing the needs and aspirations of Jamaicans living abroad. With a shared commitment to fostering growth and development, the discussions aimed to strengthen the bonds between Jamaica and its global diaspora community.
