Written by on May 22, 2025

ASMARA, Eritrea — Eritrean nationals around the world gathered this past week in vibrant celebrations marking the 34th anniversary of Eritrea’s Independence Day, held under the theme “Our Cohesion – Our Armour.”

From Germany to Saudi Arabia, Italy to the United States, the diaspora honoured the historic occasion with patriotic zeal, cultural showcases, and community gatherings that reflected the unity and resilience of Eritrean identity.

Celebrations in Germany and Europe

In Germany, commemorations were held in Nuremberg, Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Freiburg, and Mönchengladbach. Eritrean families—including children and youth—participated in a range of cultural and artistic presentations. Events were also platforms for political and national briefings, with dignitaries such as Mr. Yohannes Woldu, Chargé d’Affaires at the Eritrean Embassy; Mr. Kibreab Tekeste, Eritrea’s Consul General in Frankfurt; and Mr. Teame Haile, Head of Public and Community Affairs, addressing the community about the enduring significance of independence in the national consciousness.

Italy also hosted large diaspora celebrations in Rome, Catania, and Pisa on May 18. In Rome, Eritrea’s Ambassador to Italy, Mr. Fesehatsion Petros, spoke about the current developments in Eritrea and emphasized the strategic role Eritrean nationals abroad continue to play in national development. More celebrations are planned throughout Italy from May 25 to June 1.

Global Unity from Harrisburg to Jeddah

In the United States, the Eritrean community in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, hosted a cultural evening on May 17 filled with music, dance, and speeches reflecting the pride and commitment of the diaspora to their homeland.

In Saudi Arabia, Eritrean nationals across several southern cities marked the occasion with enthusiasm. The events showcased Eritrean cultural diversity and highlighted the spirit of unity that binds the diaspora to the nation’s history and future.

A Global Network of Patriotism

Eritrea’s 34th Independence Day marks more than three decades of sovereignty since gaining independence in 1991 following a 30-year armed struggle. For Eritreans abroad, the celebrations are not only a remembrance of hard-won freedom but a recommitment to the values of self-reliance, unity, and cultural pride.

As the theme “Our Cohesion – Our Armour” suggests, the strength of the Eritrean people—at home and abroad—continues to lie in their collective spirit and unwavering national identity.
