Written by on September 13, 2024

Kingston, Jamaica – Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Daryl Vaz, has called for an immediate and thorough review of ambulance services at one of Jamaica’s busiest airports. Citing an alarming 21-year period without a proper evaluation, Vaz expressed deep concerns over the lack of essential medical resources.

In a recent statement posted on social media, Vaz highlighted the rapid expansion of the airport, including the increase in both staff and passengers. According to him, such developments should have mandated regular reviews of emergency medical services.

21 years with no review of the ambulance arrangements is unacceptable and inexcusable.

The expansion of the airport and increased staff and passengers should have mandates that this be done.

“Twenty-one years with no review of the ambulance arrangements is unacceptable and inexcusable,” Vaz wrote, underlining the need for swift action to address the current situation.

He emphasized that he has already ordered a full review and instructed management to take immediate action to address these shortcomings. “I have ordered a full review and instructed that the management takes action to immediately ensure they have an ambulance and a doctor on location, pending the completion of the review and presentation of their findings and recommendations,” he added.

Vaz’s announcement has sparked conversation about the importance of having fully equipped medical teams and ambulances on standby in high-traffic public areas, particularly at airports where medical emergencies could arise unexpectedly.

As the review proceeds, the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications, and Transport (@MSETGovJM) will oversee the implementation of necessary changes to ensure better preparedness in handling emergencies. The minister’s actions reflect a commitment to improving the safety and well-being of both travelers and airport personnel.
