Shining a Spotlight on a Forgotten Canadian Hero

A youth-led theatre production is set to bring an overlooked piece of Canadian history to the stage this summer, telling the extraordinary story of Gloria Baylis – a Barbadian Canadian nurse whose courage reshaped Canada’s human rights laws.

Presented by Brampton-based nonprofit Enroute 2 Success, Breaking Barriers: The Story of Gloria Baylis will take place at The Exchange Theatre in Niagara Falls on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 4:00 PM.

Gloria Baylis: A Landmark Legal Victory

Baylis’ story dates back to 1964 when she was denied a nursing position because of her race. Refusing to accept discrimination, she pursued legal action and, in 1965, became the first Black woman in Canada to win a racial discrimination case. Her 12-year legal battle set a groundbreaking precedent for workplace equity and laid the foundation for human rights protections nationwide.

Youth-Led Theatre Bringing History to Life

“Gloria’s story is a powerful Canadian example of courage and resilience. I’m excited to produce the play and work with the students again to raise awareness about such an important part of Canadian history,” said Denée Rudder, playwright of Breaking Barriers.

Originally premiered during Black History Month at Brampton’s Cyril Clark Theatre, the play received overwhelming community support. The debut event included a fireside chat featuring Gloria Baylis’ son, Frank Baylis, human rights lawyer Lavinia Latham, and Rudder. Following the sold-out success, the production is now expanding to Niagara Falls to reach more audiences.

“After the sold-out event and such great feedback in Brampton, we knew we couldn’t stop there and wanted to bring Gloria’s story to more communities,” Rudder added.

Proceeds Supporting Youth Empowerment Programs

All proceeds from the Niagara Falls performance will benefit Enroute 2 Success, funding mentorship, leadership development, life skills training, and unique experiences for youth across the Greater Toronto Area.

Founded in 2022 by Dave Rudder, the nonprofit has provided free programs in golf, chess, community workshops, and the arts – all designed to help young people build confidence, resilience, and practical skills for the future.
