Andrew Holness Commemorates 30th Anniversary of UNESCO’s Routes of Enslaved Peoples Programme

Kingston, Jamaica – Prime Minister Andrew Holness joined a solemn gathering today to commemorate the 30th anniversary of UNESCO’s Routes of Enslaved Peoples Programme. The event, held at the “Ark of Return,” focused on honoring the victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade under the poignant theme, “Acknowledge the Tragedy; Consider the Legacy; Lest We Forget.”

In his address, Holness emphasized the profound impact of the transatlantic slave trade, describing it as “one of the greatest atrocities in history.” He highlighted the historical accounts detailing the horrific experiences endured by enslaved Africans during the 400 years of transatlantic chattel slavery.

“Yet, through their own action and great sacrifice, our ancestors emerged as heroes,” Holness stated. “They passed on to their descendants the dignity, integrity, and resilience with which they became masters of their own destinies.”

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Jamaica’s unwavering commitment to pursuing reparatory justice and acknowledged the significance of the Second International Decade for People of African Descent. He expressed eagerness to collaborate with longstanding partners to advance these crucial initiatives.

The event served as a poignant reminder of the resilience of those who suffered and the ongoing journey toward recognition and reconciliation. Holness’s presence underscored Jamaica’s role in the global conversation about the legacy of slavery and the need for reparative justice.

As the commemoration concluded, participants reflected on the importance of remembering the past while forging a path towards a more equitable future.
