KINGSTON, Jamaica — The inaugural A’Legends School Tour has wrapped its successful first staging, bringing smiles, stories, and inspiration to children across Kingston, St. Andrew, and St. Catherine. The weeklong initiative, spearheaded by US-based Jamaican fashion designer and author Jenelle Alexia, aimed to promote literacy and uplift students through reading and entertainment.
Alexia, who is also CEO of her clothing brand A’Legends, and author of two children’s books inspired by her upbringing, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the tour’s success.
“This tour has been years in the making, and to have finally done it is a dream come true,” Alexia shared. “The look on the faces of these beautiful children did it for me… It’s not for me, it’s for the children, and to eradicate Jamaica’s ‘dunce’ culture, even if it takes years, A’Legends will do it.”
The tour featured interactive reading sessions from Alexia’s books “Keira Discovers Her Talent” and “Keira and Jamie Discover A Musical Dream.” It culminated on Read Across Jamaica Day, May 6, where Alexia joined Honourable Olivia “Babsy” Grange, Jamaica’s Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, and Shauna Fung Yee, at Ensom City and Eltham Park Primary Schools.
A key supporter of the tour was Dr. Michelle Gill, a Guyanese-American philanthropist and founder of Michelle’s Foundation, who donated 12 tablets and school supplies, and was present on the ground in Jamaica.
“It’s a great initiative,” Gill stated. “Alexia is a visionary, and I’ll continue to support her. She’s always giving back, even joining my Back to School Drive in New Jersey every year.”
The tour was further supported by sponsors including Streamline Auto Sales and Rental, Ejor Media Group, One Family Records, Dow Records, Shunny Records, and Ask Blondie TV, with the groundwork expertly coordinated by Eugene Pitter and PR efforts led by Lesley Hayles.
Looking ahead, Alexia is working on her third children’s book and aims to integrate her book series into Jamaica’s school curriculum by September 2025, while also planning to expand the tour to Guyana, the Caribbean, Ghana, and other African nations. She is also set to receive the Diaspora Excellence Award at the upcoming Rediscover Africa 2025 Africa Night Out Gala and Awards in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on May 24th.
