Legends of the Highway Brings Florida Highwaymen’s True Story to the Big Screen
FORT PIERCE, FL – A defining story of Black artistry, resilience, and legacy takes center stage this fall with the release of Legends of the Highway, a new feature film inspired by the true story of the Florida Highwaymen — a pioneering group of African American artists who painted their way into American history.
The film makes its theatrical premiere on October 25, followed by a DVD and digital release on October 28, and streaming debut on November 25 across major platforms.
Produced by Maverick Entertainment Group, Legends of the Highway stars Julian Horton, Kelvin Hair, Johnell Young, and Ashani Roberts, and captures the untold story of self-taught painters in 1950s and 1960s Florida who used art as both economic survival and cultural resistance during segregation.
“Legends of the Highway is not just about art—it’s about legacy,” said producer Kenny Holmes. “These artists painted their freedom, and their stories deserve to be seen and celebrated.”
Who Were the Florida Highwaymen?
The Florida Highwaymen were a group of 26 Black artists who, despite the restrictions of Jim Crow laws and systemic exclusion from mainstream galleries, created and sold vibrant Florida landscapes from the trunks of their cars and along roadsides. Their work became legendary, not only for its visual beauty but for its role in defining a bold and entrepreneurial Black art movement in the American South.
A special element of the film is the casting of Kelvin Hair, grandson of legendary Highwayman Alfred Hair, in the role of his own grandfather — adding emotional depth and a powerful generational connection to the story.
