DAR ES SALAAM, TanzaniaIn a landmark diplomatic engagement, Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan hosted Namibia’s President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for a two-day state visit from May 20 to 21, 2025. This meeting marked President Nandi-Ndaitwah’s first official visit to Tanzania since her inauguration as Namibia’s first female president in March 2025.

The leaders convened at the State House in Dar es Salaam, reaffirming the longstanding solidarity between their nations, rooted in shared histories of liberation struggles. President Suluhu warmly welcomed her counterpart, stating, “As was the case during the era of our founding fathers, the late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and the late Sam Nujoma, we continue to strengthen the brotherhood and cooperation that began during the period of struggle for independence.”

Economic Collaboration and Youth Empowerment

Central to their discussions was the mutual commitment to bolster economic cooperation. Trade between Namibia and Tanzania currently stands at approximately US$7.5 million, a figure both leaders agreed needs significant enhancement. They identified key sectors for collaboration, including agriculture, fisheries, tourism, the blue economy, and infrastructure development.

She emphasized the importance of creating youth-driven value chains to stimulate sustainable development.

Cultural and Historical Bonds

The visit also underscored the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations. President Nandi-Ndaitwah, who lived in Tanzania from 1980 to 1986 during Namibia’s fight against colonialism and apartheid, paid homage to this shared legacy. She acknowledged Tanzania’s support during Namibia’s liberation struggle and proposed the establishment of the Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma Library at the historic Kongwa camp, aiming to preserve and document the liberation history of both countries.

Looking Ahead

Both leaders agreed on the necessity of translating political goodwill into tangible economic actions. They emphasized the importance of measurable, mutually beneficial, and people-centered cooperation. President Suluhu invited Namibian enterprises to participate in the upcoming Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, aiming to strengthen business-to-business linkages and expose Namibian products to the East African market.

The visit concluded with a shared vision of advancing regional integration, fostering economic growth, and empowering future generations through strategic partnerships.
