NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto met with South Africa’s Acting Director-General of the State Security Agency, Ambassador Gloria Nozuko Bam, at State House Nairobi on May 19, 2025. The meeting underscored the growing importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing national and regional security across Africa.

President Ruto emphasized the critical role of AI in safeguarding nations and predicting threats that could disrupt socio-economic stability. He advocated for increased collaboration among African intelligence agencies to harness emerging technologies effectively.

The discussions highlighted the necessity for joint efforts in adopting AI-driven solutions to address common security challenges, including terrorism and cyber threats. By integrating AI into surveillance, border control, and cyber intelligence, African nations aim to enhance threat detection and response capabilities, particularly in remote and border regions where extremist activities are prevalent.

This initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader strategy to position itself as a leader in technological innovation and regional security. The government has recently invested in digital infrastructure and is advancing plans for an East African AI framework to bolster smart security systems.

Ambassador Bam’s visit signifies a commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and fostering a unified approach to security challenges through technological advancement.

As Africa faces evolving security threats, the collaboration between Kenya and South Africa marks a significant step towards leveraging AI for the continent’s safety and development.
