FORT MEYERS, Fla., – Former NBA guard and National Basketball League (NBL) star Calvin Bruton has dedicated his life to giving back, and now, his efforts are receiving significant support. GameAbove Sports, the sports division of GameAbove, has donated $800,000 AUD to the Bruton Basketball Foundation (BBF), ensuring the foundation’s continued success in uplifting young athletes and communities across Australia. The organization will now be known as BBF, Powered by GameAbove Sports.
GameAbove, a brand deeply rooted in philanthropy, recognized Bruton’s dedication to mentoring and coaching young men and women through basketball and beyond. GameAbove Chairman Keith J. Stone praised Bruton’s impact, stating, “We believe in bettering the lives of children. Calvin has done an incredible and inspirational job of coaching and educating young men and women, helping them aspire to be the best they can be.”
Bruton, who has long emphasized the importance of teamwork and perseverance, expressed deep gratitude for GameAbove’s support. “GameAbove’s commitment and financial assistance has taken BBF and me to a whole new level of excitement. The opportunity is one that I’m forever grateful for. It will help uplift young people all around Australia,” he said.
The Bruton Basketball Foundation is not solely about sports; it focuses on education and employment, helping young people secure jobs and further their education. According to Bruton, the foundation has already impacted thousands of lives, and with GameAbove Sports’ backing, it aims to expand even further. “The success stories are what keep us going. There are no limitations to helping anyone become a better version of themselves,” Bruton noted.
Bruton’s own career exemplifies the values he instills in young people. A former standout at Wichita State University from 1972-1976, Bruton overcame his 5-foot-9 frame to become a dominant force in the NBL. He led the league in scoring, assists, free-throw shooting, and three-point shooting at different times, earning the nickname “The Black Pearl.” He also won championships as both a player and coach and was named NBL Coach of the Year. Additionally, he made history as the first Black-American to represent Australia in any sport at the World Championships in Spain.
Basketball excellence runs in the Bruton family. Calvin’s son, CJ Bruton, captained Australia’s national team at the Athens and Beijing Olympics, and together, they are only the second father-son duo to be inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame. CJ is also an executive within BBF, continuing the family legacy of mentorship and development in basketball.
Bruton’s decades-long friendship with basketball legend George Gervin helped pave the way for BBF’s partnership with GameAbove Sports. Gervin commended Bruton’s lifelong contributions to the game and community, stating, “What I admire most about Calvin is his love for the game and his love for people. He was a winner on the court, and now he’s winning off it, and the communities around Australia are benefitting. He’s teaching basketball and life skills; he’s making a difference.”
With this new partnership, BBF, Powered by GameAbove Sports, is set to expand its mission of empowering young Australians through sports, education, and employment opportunities. Bruton’s unwavering commitment to youth development continues to inspire and make a lasting difference in communities across the country.
