Uganda President Addresses Arrests of State House Staff, Defends Supporters Mukasa and Nalweyiso

KAMPALA, Uganda — President Yoweri Museveni has confirmed the recent arrests of several State House staff members, addressing what he described as “partially true but also false and malicious” social media reports regarding the situation. In a message shared on social media, President Museveni stated that the staff members were detained on his orders following intelligence reports and are currently facing charges in State courts.

Museveni’s remarks aimed to clarify the ongoing situation while also defending two prominent figures, Abu Mukasa and Prossy Nalweyiso, whose names have been implicated in some of the circulating stories. He emphasized that the arrests should not be linked to Mukasa and Nalweyiso, labeling attempts to involve them as unjust and misleading.

Fellow Ugandans, especially the Bazzukulu,

My social media team has drawn my attention to social media stories that are partially true but also false and malicious. It is true that, on my orders, after receiving intelligence information, some staff at State House have been… pic.twitter.com/OCH2lbHPcY

Defending Abu Mukasa and Prossy Nalweyiso

Abu Mukasa, a well-known supporter of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and an active investor, was singled out by Museveni as a significant contributor to Uganda’s economic development. The president highlighted Mukasa’s role in bringing billions of dollars in investments to the country, including a high-profile multi-billion-dollar bulk fuel supply project involving the company Vittol.

According to Museveni, Vittol had offered to sell petroleum, diesel, and kerosene to Uganda at considerably lower prices than what was being supplied by other vendors. The president criticized “foreign and local parasites” who, allegedly in collusion with corrupt or negligent officials, have worked to hinder the country’s economic progress by allowing inflated fuel prices to persist. He suggested that these elements view Mukasa’s investment efforts as a threat to their personal interests.

Prossy Nalweyiso, whom Museveni referred to as a “veteran female warrior of the Ugandan People’s resistance,” was also defended. Nalweyiso is known for her longstanding service and contribution to the country’s security forces and resistance efforts. Museveni did not elaborate on the specific allegations involving Nalweyiso but suggested that including her name in the accusations was an attempt to tarnish her reputation.

Details Awaiting Trial

While Museveni confirmed the arrests, he refrained from providing detailed information about the specific offences, stating that the facts would be revealed during the trial. The president’s comments suggest a desire to address concerns among the public and his supporters, particularly the Bazzukulu, the younger generation that has been vocal on social media.

The arrests have sparked widespread speculation, with some media outlets alleging corruption and abuse of office as potential charges. Museveni’s intervention is seen as an effort to contain the fallout and reassure Ugandans that the legal process will transparently address the issues at hand.

The case is expected to draw significant attention as more details emerge during the proceedings.
