New York, USA  — Prime Minister Andrew Holness addressed the Jamaican Diaspora in New York over the weekend, sharing his government’s vision for Jamaica’s future, with a strong emphasis on education, economic diversification, and resilience against global challenges.

In his speech, Holness spoke directly to the concerns of many Jamaicans both at home and abroad, stating, “I know many thinking Jamaicans are asking, ‘What is the substance of the government and what will it be doing in the next five years?’”

Highlighting the importance of preparing Jamaica’s future workforce, Holness announced the government’s decision to build six new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) schools. “We must invest massively in education so that we can be competent, and thrive both in the world we live now, and in the society of the future,” he said. This investment in education, he explained, is critical for Jamaica to remain competitive on a global scale.

Holness also reflected on missed opportunities for national growth but emphasized the need for Jamaica to be ready for upcoming prospects. “We have missed many important growth opportunities, and must be careful to take advantage of those on the horizon,” he noted.

Economic diversification, according to Holness, is key to Jamaica’s resilience in the face of global crises. “We must diversify our economy and industries, and this is necessary for the growth of our economy and to deliver the life we want for our people even in the midst of global challenges like we have seen with the pandemic, natural disasters, and international conflicts,” he said.

The Prime Minister’s message resonated with the Jamaican Diaspora, a group that plays a pivotal role in supporting Jamaica through remittances and other forms of economic contribution. Holness urged Jamaicans abroad to remain engaged and help the nation seize the opportunities ahead.

With education and economic growth at the heart of his plans, Holness’ address provided a clear roadmap for the next phase of Jamaica’s development amidst evolving global dynamics.
