Kingston, Jamaica — Prime Minister Andrew Holness has departed Jamaica for New York to participate in the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The event, which draws leaders from around the world, is held under the theme “Unity in Diversity: For the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Everyone.”
In a statement posted on social media, Prime Minister Holness reiterated Jamaica’s commitment to sustainable development, highlighting the country’s role as a small island developing state with distinct challenges. “Jamaica has always been a strong voice of advocacy for sustainable development, particularly as a small island developing state with unique development challenges,” he said.

Holness emphasized that this year’s UNGA provides a crucial platform to push forward global and local goals aligned with sustainable development. “That advocacy continues today and will be maintained with the objective of ensuring the realization of our goals both in alignment with the international community as well as those specific to our local circumstances,” he added.
Jamaica has long been a vocal participant in international discussions around climate change, peacebuilding, and equitable development, championing the cause of small island nations facing disproportionate impacts from global challenges.
