OAS Delegation Meets with Key Stakeholders in Jamaica to Discuss Electoral and Gender Initiatives

Kingston, Jamaica — A delegation from the Organization of American States (OAS) visited Jamaica this week, engaging with a wide range of local stakeholders to discuss issues related to electoral processes, gender equality, and civil society involvement. The meetings, which took place on September 13, 2024, were part of ongoing efforts by the OAS to strengthen democratic governance and promote gender inclusivity in the region.

The OAS group held discussions with the Electoral Commission of Jamaica (ECJ), representatives from The Mico University College, and the High Commissioner of Canada to Jamaica. Key areas of focus included improving electoral transparency, voter education, and the role of youth in civic participation. In addition to these electoral matters, the delegation also placed significant emphasis on gender issues.

The OAS team met with representatives from UN Women Caribbean and the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment, and Sport (MCGES), led by Minister Olivia Grange, who has been a vocal advocate for gender equality in Jamaica. Discussions covered initiatives aimed at closing the gender gap in leadership roles and promoting women’s participation in politics and civil society.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, also participated in the meetings, underscoring Jamaica’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and advancing gender equality in line with regional and international standards. The OAS representatives acknowledged Jamaica’s ongoing efforts in these areas and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to providing support where necessary.

In addition, the OAS delegation met with members of Jamaica’s Parliamentary Women’s Caucus, engaging in discussions around strengthening the participation of women in politics and leadership roles across the country. Civil society organizations were also represented in the discussions, highlighting their critical role in promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusivity within the electoral process.

These meetings are part of a broader agenda by the OAS to strengthen democratic institutions and promote inclusive governance across the region. The visit was well received by local stakeholders, and future collaborations are expected to arise from the fruitful discussions.
