Written by on July 31, 2024
Toronto, ON – Toronto City Hall will be a vibrant hub of celebration tomorrow as Mayor Olivia Chow officially proclaims August as Emancipation Month in the city. The flag-raising ceremony, which will take place on the Podium Roof of Toronto City Hall, marks a significant moment in the city’s ongoing commitment to recognizing and celebrating Black history and culture.
The event will be held from noon to 12:45 p.m. and will feature an array of performances and ceremonial elements. The ceremony will include dynamic performances by renowned drummer Njau and talented saxophonist Jay Smooth. An Afro-Indigenous welcome will be delivered by Kayla Webber, setting a tone of unity and respect. Elder Ginelle Skerritt will lead the gathering in a traditional libation, and Dr. Itah Sadu from the Blackhurst Cultural Centre will offer insightful remarks.
The City of Toronto has a long-standing tradition of honoring Emancipation Day, officially proclaiming August 1 as Emancipation Day since 1998. In 2019, the city extended this recognition throughout the month of August, now celebrated as Emancipation Month. This annual observance serves as a time for reflection, education, and celebration of the rich cultural contributions of Black communities.
Councillor Chris Moise, who represents Toronto-Centre and chairs the City’s Confronting Anti-Black Racism Advisory Committee, will also be present to support the event and engage with the community.
The significance of this event extends beyond the ceremonial flag-raising. It represents a continued effort to confront and address the historical injustices faced by Black individuals and to celebrate the resilience and achievements of Black communities.
