“We are excited to reach this amazing milestone of 500 Accomplished Black Canadian Women who have now been recognized for their achievements,” said Dauna Jones-Simmonds, Co-Founder of 100ABCWomen. “We are also looking forward to the insightful discussion the night before at the symposium to discuss the integration of Black history into the school curriculum with some of the leading voices on the issue.”
On Friday, September 27th, the SOLD OUT symposium titled “Building A Black History Education Curriculum” will be presented by TD Ready Commitment and Heritage Canada. The panelists for this important discussion include Dr. Camille Logan from the Peel District School Board, Dr. Natasha Henry-Dixon from York University, and Dr. Karen Hudson from the Halifax Regional Center for Education. The symposium will focus on the integration of Black history into school curriculums, ensuring that future generations understand the full scope of Canada’s diverse history.
Launched in 2016, 100ABCWomen was co-authored by Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine, Dr. Denise O’Neil Green, and Dauna Jones-Simmonds. The initiative aims to inspire and empower Black girls and women by spotlighting the many contributions Black women have made to Canadian society. In addition to honoring these women, the 100ABCWomen database now includes profiles of 500 accomplished Black women, preserving their legacies for future generations.
According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, Black women face significant barriers in the workforce, including being over-represented in precarious employment and facing slower career advancement. Events like the 100ABCWomen Gala not only celebrate individual achievements but also work toward addressing systemic barriers that persist.
