Uganda President Advocates for Youth-Led Wealth Creation to Tackle Unemployment
Written by on October 7, 2024
Entebbe, Uganda – President Yoweri K. Museveni held a significant meeting with youth leaders in Entebbe yesterday, facilitated by Col. Edith Nakalema. The President underscored the critical role of wealth creation in addressing Uganda’s unemployment challenges, noting that the government can only provide a limited number of jobs in the public sector.
During the discussion, Museveni emphasized that there are approximately 470,000 jobs available in the public service, which is insufficient to accommodate the growing youth population. He urged young Ugandans to engage in entrepreneurial activities rather than solely relying on government positions for employment.

“The source of jobs lies in wealth creation, not solely in waiting for government positions,” Museveni stated. “We must empower ourselves to generate income and create opportunities.”
The President also made a clear distinction between development and wealth creation. He explained that while development initiatives, such as roads, electricity, and schools, benefit the entire community, personal wealth generation is crucial for individual families. “Development belongs to everybody,” he remarked. “But what comes to the home is wealth.”
In concluding his address, Museveni reiterated the importance of security and service provision, highlighting that after ensuring these foundational elements, wealth creation should be the next priority for all Ugandans. The meeting aimed to inspire the youth to take proactive steps towards financial independence and contribute to the nation’s economic growth.
As Uganda continues to navigate economic challenges, the government’s focus on empowering the youth through wealth creation initiatives could pave the way for a more sustainable future, ultimately reducing unemployment and fostering national development.
