Memphis – This past weekend, the 9th annual St. Jude Spirit of the Dream Gala, presented by W&T Contracting Corporation, was held at The Guest House at Graceland. The event celebrated the achievements of African Americans who have made significant contributions to Memphis and beyond, all while supporting the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®. The gala successfully raised more than $255,000 for the hospital’s efforts in finding cures for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Guests enjoyed a captivating musical performance by Wendy Moten, known for her powerful vocals and her journey as a contestant on Season 21 of The Voice. She delivered a selection of songs that emphasized perseverance and hope. Additionally, St. Jude patient Sabrina shared her personal journey by reciting poetry that highlighted the impact of St. Jude on her life.

September is particularly significant as it marks both Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Kera Wright, Chief Financial Officer for ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude, expressed gratitude to the honorees and highlighted the importance of their contributions during this meaningful time.

This year’s gala honored individuals whose dedication to community service and support for St. Jude embodies the organization’s mission.

The Legacy Award was presented to A C Wharton, Jr., the executive director of development at ALSAC and former Mayor of Memphis. The award recognizes the exemplary commitment of St. Jude team members to the legacy of the hospital. Wharton emphasized the importance of service and giving back to the community.

Spirit of the Dream Awards: Carolyn Chism Hardy and Peter Woods
Carolyn Chism Hardy and Peter Woods were recipients of the Spirit of the Dream Award, which honors individuals or institutions embodying the lifesaving mission of St. Jude and its founder, Danny Thomas. Hardy, the CEO of Chism Hardy Investments, LLC, spoke about her passion for supporting children with cancer and sickle cell disease. Woods, a well-known artist from Mound Bayou, Mississippi, reflected on his experiences and contributions, stating that his family is grateful for the research done on sickle cell disease.

The funds raised from the gala will help ensure that families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing, or food, allowing them to focus on their children’s health.
