Kingston, Jamaica — As Caribbean communities around the world observe Emancipation Day, renowned reggae artist Jah Ranks is leading the charge in remembering the historical struggle and triumphs that paved the way for freedom. His latest single, “Hanging on The Gallows,” offers a powerful tribute to the legacy of those who fought against the horrors of slavery.
Emancipation Day, celebrated annually on August 1, marks the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. This year, Jah Ranks’ poignant new release underscores the importance of reflecting on this significant milestone and honoring the heroes of the past.
“The horrific years of slavery, including the sacrifices made by individuals like Samuel Sharpe and Paul Bogle, should never be forgotten,” Jah Ranks asserts. “Through ‘Hanging on The Gallows,’ I hope to bring attention to the struggles and resilience of our ancestors and highlight the significance of Emancipation Day.”
The single, recorded at Anchor Recording Studios in Kingston, Jamaica, vividly recounts the brutal realities of slavery and the enduring spirit of resistance. The chorus of the song captures the essence of this struggle: “Dead body hanging, Hanging on the Gallows Memba St.Thomas. Dead body hanging Hanging on the gallows in St. Thomas…”
Jah Ranks’ musical journey began at the age of 14, performing at church concerts in Manchester. After relocating to Glendevon, St. James at 21, he recorded his first single, “Home Sweet Home,” and has since released notable tracks such as “The Highest Being” and “Proud of Creation.” His discography includes four acclaimed albums: AbC 123, Positive, Hands Ina Di Lion Mouth, and The Highest Being.
In addition to his musical achievements, Jah Ranks has performed at prominent events such as the Emancipation Show at Sam Sharpe Square, Coral Gardens Benevolent Show, and Haile Selassie Birthday Show. His latest project, the music video for “Hanging on The Gallows,” is eagerly anticipated and promises to further his mission of celebrating and preserving Caribbean history and culture.
As Emancipation Day serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of resistance and liberation, Jah Ranks’ contribution stands as a testament to the power of music in shaping and remembering our shared heritage.
