Reggae Grammy run warms up!

It’s Grammy season and as the Recording Academy gets ready to roll out the nominations for the 67th annual Grammy Awards on November 8, the first round of voting kicked off on October 4 and will continue through to October 15.

This year, some 75 albums/compilations have been submitted for consideration in the Best Reggae Album category.

The period of eligibility for albums/songs is September 16, 2023 to August 30, 2024.

Several well-known reggae and dancehall acts are in the mix, hoping to be among the final five nominees in the category.

Some of the projects submitted are Bob Marley: One Love – music inspired by the film (Deluxe edition), The Gentle Man by Romain Virgo, I am Chippy by Teejay, Never Gets Late Here by Shenseea, Take It Easy by Collie Buddz, See It Deh by Ras Shiloh, Recovery by Rygin King, Strength by Samory-I, Black Attack by Mutabaruka, Music Iis More by Ginjah, Guarded (EP) by Gyptian and Chambah, Sax to Dub by Dean Fraser, UB45 by UB40, Party With Me by Vybz Kartel, Stay True by Khalia, Free Man by Norris Man, Born To Be Free by Exco Levi, Mirror 25 by Spice, Beauty in the Acoustic by former winners SOJA, Evolution by The Wailers, Energy Never Lie by Zagga, and Lee “Scratch” Perry with two projects Heaven and King Perry.

There are also submissions by Bugle, Etana, Govana, Jah Lil, JonFX, Masicka, Chyna Nicole, George Nooks, Irie Souljah, Protoje and Zion-I Kings, Tribal Seeds, Izybeats, and Rvssian’s Dutty Money Rhythm (Deluxe Edition).

First instituted in 1984 as the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Recording, the category was later renamed Best Reggae Album. Black Uhuru’s Anthem was the first winner of the reggae category.

The winner of the 2024 award, which was presented earlier this year, was Julian Marley and Antaeus for their collaborative project
Colors of Royal.

The 67th Grammy Awards will take place on February 2, 2025 at Crypto Arena in Los Angeles, California.
