Rasta Blacspade Urges Jamaican Government to Cut Custom Duties on Aid Barrels for Hurricane Victims
Written by on August 6, 2024
Kingston, Jamaica – Rasta Blacspade, the artist known for his track “Love Over All Things,” has called on the Jamaican government to reduce custom duties on imported barrels, especially those sent by families and friends to assist hurricane victims. He emphasizes that lowering these duties could provide significant relief by increasing access to essential food items and clothing.
The artist highlighted the pressing need for basic necessities among over 500,000 Jamaicans, as unofficial figures suggest a widespread shortage. The required items include staples like sugar, flour, rice, cornmeal, and tinned goods, as well as clothing and toiletries such as soap and tissues.
“The Government should drastically reduce custom duties. This will translate into more help, in terms of basic food items and clothing for hurricane victims,” said Rasta Blacspade.
The current flat rate for clearing a barrel in Jamaica is JA$6,500, provided the contents are not intended for commercial purposes. While non-profit institutions like Food for the Poor, which supports approximately 300,000 individuals monthly, are exempt from these duties, Rasta Blacspade believes more should be done for general relief efforts.
Adding to the urgency, the artist noted the rising cost of agricultural goods, with some higglers reportedly selling onions for as much as JA$500 per pound. He stresses that reduced custom duties could help alleviate the financial burden on those sending aid and on the recipients.
Aside from his advocacy, Rasta Blacspade is nearing the completion of his debut album, “Love Over All Things.” He is also gearing up for his first tour in Gambia, Africa, scheduled for December 2024, and is expanding his musical presence in Kenya, Germany, and the Caribbean.
