The CHOGM, an important biennial gathering of leaders from the 56 member countries of the Commonwealth, provides a platform for discussing key global issues, including sustainable development, climate action, and economic cooperation. Barbados, which transitioned to a republic in 2021 under Mottley’s leadership, remains an active member of the Commonwealth.
This year’s meeting is expected to address a wide range of pressing global challenges, with climate resilience, especially in small island states like Barbados, likely to be at the forefront of discussions. Mottley, known for her advocacy on climate issues, has previously emphasized the need for Commonwealth nations to take collective action in combating climate change and securing a sustainable future.
The conversation between Prime Minister Mottley and King Charles III reflects the strong ties between Barbados and the United Kingdom, even after the island’s formal break from the British monarchy. Both leaders have a shared commitment to advancing the goals of the Commonwealth, particularly in the areas of environmental protection and equitable economic development.
The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will take place from October 30 to November 1, 2024, in Apia, Samoa.
