Mia Amor Mottley Assumes Chair of CARICOM and Champions Regional Unity

Bridgetown, Barbados – The Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, has officially assumed the role of Chair of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as of January 1, 2025. In her New Year’s address, Mottley expressed her hope and determination for the region’s progress under her leadership.
“As Chair, I greet you with hope and determination,” Mottley stated in a social media post, highlighting her commitment to tackling challenges, advancing the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), fostering regional unity and resilience, and celebrating Caribbean creativity at CARIFESTA XV, set to be hosted in Barbados.
Mottley’s appointment was celebrated by CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett, who welcomed the Barbadian leader’s tenure at the helm of the regional bloc.

The day also marked another significant event, Haiti’s 221st Independence anniversary. Mottley acknowledged the historic milestone, calling Haiti’s story one of “resilience and the fight for freedom.” She urged continued international support for Haiti’s people, security, and transformative development.
Mottley’s leadership tenure coincides with a pivotal moment for CARICOM as member states strive to address pressing issues, including economic recovery, climate resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of deeper regional integration through CSME.
The Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA XV), scheduled for later this year in Barbados, promises to be a showcase of the region’s cultural vibrancy, offering an opportunity to unite Caribbean nations in celebration of their shared heritage and creativity.
Mottley’s role as CARICOM Chair positions her to lead critical discussions and initiatives aimed at strengthening the region’s socioeconomic fabric and global standing.
