Kingston, Jamaica – Renowned reggae artist Mackie Conscious was among the many attendees at IRIE FM’s annual tribute to National Hero Marcus Mosiah Garvey, which took place on Sunday, August 18, 2024, inside the Courtyard of IRIE FM and Coconut Sunday.

This year’s tribute, themed “Social Justice and Civil Rights; we have a voice, make us a part of the decision-making process,” featured speeches from Bert Samuels, Minister David Muhammed, and Councillor Eugene Jelly. The event also included performances by Cherry Natural, Charmaine Ital, The Accompong Maroons, Mutabaruka, Anthony Cruz, Royal Flames, and others, all celebrating Garvey’s enduring legacy.

Marcus Garvey, a National Hero of Jamaica, is remembered for his teachings on self-confidence, self-reliance, and the importance of unity among Black people worldwide. Born on August 17, 1887, Garvey’s legacy continues to inspire and uplift communities long after his passing on June 10, 1940.

Mackie Conscious, who attended the tribute, shared his thoughts on the event, saying, “Marcus Garvey Tribute is an annual show which I am looking forward to every August—the month Garvey was born.” He emphasized that while Garvey’s words have resonated for decades, there is a need to build upon them. “Instead of using Marcus Garvey’s words in my songs, I use the message to expand his language,” he explained. “Every time I write a great song, I use the concept of Marcus Garvey’s teachings to create my own unique style, which can be more accepted by this generation.”

During the tribute, Mackie Conscious performed songs that he believes Garvey would have endorsed, including “Can’t Be A Friend If Yu Nuh Loyal,” which conveys a message of honesty, truth, and lasting friendship. As he continues to work on releasing his third album, Mackie Conscious remains committed to spreading messages of hope and unity inspired by Garvey’s teachings.
