Kingston, Jamaica – Member of Parliament Lisa Hanna has presented a bold vision for tackling Jamaica’s long-standing economic challenges. At a high-level roundtable hosted by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Hanna joined key Jamaican and U.S. officials to discuss strategies for sustainable growth, focusing on workforce development and agricultural transformation.

The roundtable, which included Counselor Clinton White of USAID, Jay Singh, USAID’s Head of Mission in Jamaica, and Lloyd Jackson, Director of Citizen Security, brought together key business sector representatives. The conversation focused on increasing Jamaica’s per capita income and creating a more globally competitive economy.

There are solutions to the intractable problems that have prevented us from significantly increasing the per capita incomes of our people for decades.

Hanna outlined several proposals during the discussion, emphasizing the importance of building a skilled workforce capable of thriving in an evolving global job market. She stressed that to achieve significant economic gains, the country must invest in training and education that equips Jamaicans with the tools needed for international competitiveness.

In addition to workforce development, Hanna also highlighted the potential of Jamaica’s agricultural sector. She proposed a plan to strengthen the livelihoods of small farmers by integrating them into the local value chain and creating exportable, value-added products. These efforts, she argued, would help Jamaica boost its presence in global markets and contribute to national economic growth.

Hanna expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the roundtable and is optimistic about building a continued working relationship with USAID and the U.S. Embassy in Jamaica.

This roundtable marks another step in Jamaica’s ongoing efforts to forge partnerships that support economic development and create long-term opportunities for growth.
