Lisa Hanna Calls for Greater Advocacy on Gender Equality in Jamaica
Written by on September 9, 2024
Kingston, Jamaica — Member of Parliament Lisa Hanna has renewed calls for stronger advocacy on gender equality, highlighting the significant role women play in Jamaican society while pointing out the ongoing challenges they face. In a recent social media post, Hanna shared striking statistics about women’s contributions to the country, emphasizing that despite their representation in leadership and households, the societal cost of being female remains disproportionately high.
“Close to 50% of our population are females, close to 50% of our households are headed by women, and remarkably, close to 60% of managers in Jamaica are female. Yet, the cost of being female is still exceptionally high,” Hanna tweeted, urging Jamaicans to reflect on the disparities that continue to exist.
Hanna’s message shines a light on the achievements of women in leadership, particularly in business and management, where Jamaican women hold one of the highest percentages of managerial positions globally. However, she also underscored the need to confront the barriers that women face, including gender-based violence, pay inequality, and the rising cost of living, which disproportionately affect women-headed households.
“Let’s truly advocate as a majority,” Hanna wrote, suggesting that collective action is necessary to create meaningful change for women across Jamaica.
Hanna, known for her longstanding advocacy on social issues, continues to champion policies that promote gender equity, women’s rights, and family support systems. Her call to action resonates with many in the country as gender inequality remains a critical issue that needs attention, despite the strides made in women’s representation.
As conversations around gender and economic equality grow, Hanna’s message serves as a reminder of the need for sustained advocacy to ensure that Jamaican women receive the support and recognition they deserve.
