Liberal Caucus Celebrates Black History Month 2025 with Events in Ottawa

Ottawa, Canada – Members of the federal Liberal Caucus marked Black History Month in the National Capital Region with a series of events celebrating the Government of Canada’s theme for 2025: “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.”
The day’s activities began with roundtable discussions hosted by the Liberal Black Caucus, led by Arielle Kayabaga, Member of Parliament for London West and Chair of the Liberal Black Caucus. The discussions were attended by the Honourable Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada; the Honourable Jenna Sudds, Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development; and the Honourable Rechie Valdez, Minister of Small Business. These roundtables provided a platform for meaningful dialogue on issues affecting Black Canadians and the importance of inclusive policies.
In the afternoon, the Black Liberal Caucus organized a networking reception on Parliament Hill, bringing together professionals, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and Liberal Members of Parliament. The event served as an opportunity to celebrate Black excellence and foster collaboration across sectors.
The day’s celebrations culminated in the Government of Canada’s official Black History Month Celebration, hosted by the Honourable Kamal Khera, Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities. The event featured keynote speeches from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Minister Marci Ien, Minister Kamal Khera, and MP Arielle Kayabaga. Attendees enjoyed cultural performances and tributes to historical Black figures who have played pivotal roles in shaping Canada’s history and future.
Black History Month serves as a time to honor the contributions of Black trailblazers who have left a lasting impact on Canada. The Liberal government highlighted its commitment to supporting Black communities, emphasizing the over one billion dollars invested in Black-focused initiatives. While celebrating progress, government officials acknowledged that there is still work to be done to ensure equity and inclusion for all Canadians.
