Written by Cat Radio UK on August 1, 2025
Kingston, Jamaica — Jamaicans across the island and in the diaspora commemorated Emancipation Day 2025 with national leaders and institutions calling for reflection, unity, and renewed commitment to the nation’s ongoing journey toward justice and equality.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness: A Call to Action
Prime Minister Andrew Holness urged Jamaicans to honor the courage and sacrifice of ancestors who secured the freedoms the country now enjoys.
“Emancipation Day is not just a historic milestone, it is a call to action,” Holness shared on X (formerly Twitter). “Let us protect that freedom, uplift each other, and build the Jamaica they dreamed of: just, prosperous, and free from all forms of oppression.”
Opposition Leader Mark J. Golding: The Journey Continues
Opposition Leader Mark J. Golding reflected on the meaning of Emancipation Day, noting that the fight for equality and justice is ongoing.
“To every Jamaican, our journey continues as our work is not done,” Golding stated. “Together, with purpose and unity, we can build a nation that befits the great sacrifice of our ancestors that we celebrate on Emancipation Day.”
PNP Statement: Remembering Historic Struggles
The People’s National Party (PNP) released a message highlighting key milestones in Jamaica’s post-slavery history. The statement referenced the Morant Bay Rebellion, the Garvey movement, and the Labour Uprisings of 1938, leading to Independence in 1962.
“The Jamaican spirit has always demanded more than just survival. It has demanded dignity, equality, justice and opportunity for all,” the party said. “Today we stand on the shoulders of our heroes, named and unnamed, whose dreams of liberty helped shape the very foundation of our democracy and identity as a people.”
International Greetings: Canada Extends Well-Wishes
The High Commission of Canada in Jamaica joined in marking the occasion, stating on X:
“HAPPY EMANCIPATION DAY Jamaica! Today, we celebrate the strength, resilience and rich heritage of the Jamaican people. One love, Jamaica!”
A Day of Reflection and Celebration
Emancipation Day, observed annually on August 1, commemorates the abolition of slavery in Jamaica and throughout the British Empire in 1834. The day serves as both a solemn remembrance of a painful past and a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the continued struggle for justice and equality.
