Kingston, JamaicaJamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with her Chilean counterpart, Alberto van Klaveren. The agreement was made during a recent meeting, which Johnson Smith described as “productive and friendly,” aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The MOU, signed between Jamaica’s newly established Foreign Service Institute and Chile’s renowned Andrés Bello Diplomatic Academy, focuses on enhancing diplomatic training for both nations. This partnership will provide opportunities for Jamaican diplomats to benefit from Chile’s expertise in foreign policy, diplomacy, and international relations, while also fostering knowledge exchange between the two countries.

“Partnerships are a critical means of building capacity as we work to grow sustainably,” Minister Johnson Smith stated in a social media post following the meeting. She emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing regional issues and boosting Jamaica’s capacity in foreign affairs.

The Foreign Service Institute, launched by Jamaica’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT), is envisioned as a key institution for nurturing a new generation of Jamaican diplomats. The collaboration with Chile’s Andrés Bello Academy, widely respected in Latin America, marks an important milestone for the institute, enhancing its global reach and training capabilities.

The meeting between the two foreign ministers also covered a range of regional issues, including sustainable development, trade, and climate change. Both officials expressed their commitment to re-energizing the diplomatic relationship between Jamaica and Chile, with a shared focus on fostering closer ties in the areas of education, diplomacy, and sustainable development.

The MOU is expected to lay the foundation for continued cooperation between the countries, contributing to stronger diplomatic relations and enhanced capacity-building initiatives for both Jamaica and Chile.
