Farewell to Silkkey D: A Tribute to Gary Bryan George Thompson

Written by on July 28, 2024

Linstead, Jamaica – Silkkey D, born Gary Bryan George Thompson, was eulogized as a talented singer who would have become a great Jamaican during the Thanksgiving service held at Bon Bottom Bonnett Tabernacle Church, Linstead, on Wednesday, July 14, 2024. He was 40 years old.

The atmosphere was somber, with teary eyes and heavy hearts. His mother, Queen Alma Robinson, was visibly moved as the casket took center stage. The day itself seemed to reflect the collective sorrow, with the sun appearing dull and droopy, and dark clouds hanging overhead like a cliff. Family members wore pink, Silkkey D’s favorite color, to honor his memory and demonstrate how much he had meant to them.

His sister, Angie, described the day as “bittersweet.” She explained that while they may never see him again, it was sweet to reflect on the life he had lived. She paid tribute to Gary Thompson, representing his name as follows:

G: Gracious
A: Ambitious
R: Respectful
Y: Youthful
T: Tremendous
H: Honesty
O: Obedient
M: Meek
P: Punctual
S: Sincere
O: Optimistic
N: Neat

Among those who traveled from abroad to pay their last respects were his classmates, who recalled Silkkey D’s unblemished record in music from verse to chorus. He was also remembered as an athlete, winning races and representing Charlemont High School in football.

Entertainers Tony Curtis and Jigsy King were in attendance, showing the widespread respect and admiration Silkkey D commanded.

Bishop A. Thompson of the Bible Tabernacle Seventh Day Adventist Church delivered the sermon, emphasizing that those who live for Christ will be resurrected.

Heather Virgo, who watched the funeral on YouTube, was moved to tears. She promised to keep Silkkey D’s memory alive through his powerful music, noting that his last recorded song, “Love You Tender,” was released on her Hit Melody Records label.

Silkkey D’s legacy will continue to inspire and uplift through his music and the cherished memories of those who knew and loved him.
