Written by on November 26, 2024

Toronto, Canada – The Honourable Marci Ien, Canada’s Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, has officially launched the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign, a global initiative aimed at addressing and eradicating violence against women and girls.

In a statement on social media, Minister Ien emphasized the urgency of collective action, declaring that the campaign is “not just about awareness—it’s about change.” She called on Canadians to unite and support survivors in their journey to live free from fear and violence.

The annual campaign, observed from November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day), serves as a call to action to individuals, organizations, and governments worldwide to address gender-based violence. This year’s theme focuses on driving meaningful change through education, policy reform, and community engagement.

Canada has consistently demonstrated leadership in promoting gender equality and combating gender-based violence. Through investments in shelters, prevention programs, and survivor support services, the government aims to create safer spaces for women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals.

Minister Ien also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the systemic barriers that perpetuate violence, highlighting the importance of engaging men and boys in the conversation and fostering a culture of respect and equality.

With millions of Canadians expected to participate in awareness events, workshops, and campaigns over the next 16 days, the government hopes to amplify the voices of survivors and encourage actionable steps to end gender-based violence in all its forms.

The Honourable Marci Ien’s call to action serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure a future free of violence and inequality.
