PORTMORE, Jamaica — With his name echoing through classrooms across the island, Blac-er is no longer just a local favorite — he’s a movement in the making.
The Portmore-based dancehall artiste, born Donovan Blackwood, has been making major waves on the Fully Bright School Tour, where his performance of the viral single “Bun Him” — a collaboration with dancehall diva Macka Diamond — had students and teachers alike dancing off their shoes.
The controversial hit, aimed at calling out unfaithful men, went viral thanks to Blac-er’s unapologetic support for women and his now-famous line:
“Bun him, tek man pon him…”
Beyond “Bun Him,” Blac-er is known for other standout tracks like “Tek Off Supm” and “Gyal Just A Watch Yu” featuring the late Alton Black. But his impact goes beyond music.
Blac-er is the creator of the Top 20 Music Video Countdown, a platform that has been instrumental in promoting up-and-coming talent in Jamaica for over a decade. Originally aired on JACS cable TV with nearly 500,000 viewers, the show now broadcasts on Flow Channel 100 and Ready TV, offering national exposure to emerging dancehall stars.
A former member of the Get Rich Crew, Blac-er’s legacy includes performing with the late Notorious B.I.G. at Sting 1996, where he famously walked on stage with a suitcase full of cash and threw it into a crowd of 20,000 screaming fans.
His musical journey started at Kingston College, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in the Caribbean. “I was doing dubplates for Stone Love sound system, as that was the gateway for rising artistes,” he recalled. “One of the biggest stages was KC’s May Fair, where I shared the spotlight with Shabba Ranks.”
Other career highlights include appearances at Champions In Action (held at Fort Clarence), Pepsi Teen Splash (which drew crowds up to 40,000), and a standout performance at the Apollo Theater in New York, where he shared the stage with Jodeci.
For the rest of 2025, Blac-er is set to ramp up promotions for his latest single, “Pretty Pretty”, a track that aims to uplift women and remind them of their beauty and worth.
With viral momentum, a deep catalogue, and an eye on global stages, Blac-er is proving that his time is now.
