MIAMI, FL — The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) is celebrating 10 years of Art of Black Miami (AOBM), a transformative initiative that began in Greater Miami’s heritage neighborhoods and has grown into a countywide showcase of artistic excellence. Launched in areas like Little Haiti, Little Havana, Coconut Grove, and Historic Overtown, AOBM now stands as a dynamic platform highlighting the vibrant art scene and the deep cultural connections of the Black diaspora within Greater Miami and Miami Beach.
AOBM has become a year-round catalyst for recognizing the talent of Black and Afro-Latino artists, with renowned creatives such as Sanford Biggers, Basil Watson, Hank Willis Thomas, and Deborah Roberts contributing to the program. The initiative has solidified Miami-Dade County’s status as a hub for cutting-edge artistic expression while fostering economic opportunities for local communities.
Through its integration into the GMCVB’s Tourism Business Enhancement efforts, AOBM links the art scene with economic growth for local small businesses. Events hosted under the AOBM banner not only provide a platform for artists but also drive visibility and revenue for local enterprises, ensuring benefits extend beyond major events to create lasting community impact.
“Through our programming, we’re not only spotlighting the remarkable talent within our community, but also creating a platform for Black and Afro-Latino artists to showcase their unique expressions of Greater Miami and Miami Beach through their lived experiences,” shared Connie Kinnard, GMCVB’s Senior Vice President of Multicultural Tourism and Development. She also emphasized the program’s role in educating businesses on leveraging the cultural economy to boost year-round tourism and enhance the visibility of Miami-Dade neighborhoods.
The upcoming 2024-2025 season of AOBM promises an engaging lineup of events, celebrating creativity and cultural exchange. Featuring a mix of thought-provoking art and compelling narratives, the program will include works by both established and emerging artists, deepening audience engagement while reflecting the rich tapestry of the Black diaspora.
