City of Toronto Hosts Town Hall on 10-Year Plan to Confront Anti-Black Racism

Written by on October 6, 2024

Toronto, Canada – On Thursday, October 3, 2024, Mayor Olivia Chow and Deputy Mayor Amber Morley led a public Town Hall at Toronto City Hall to discuss the city’s renewed 10-Year Action Plan to Confront Anti-Black Racism. The event, which took place in the rotunda of City Hall, brought together residents, city officials, and community stakeholders to discuss priority areas that will inform Toronto’s continued efforts to tackle systemic anti-Black racism.

The Town Hall marked the conclusion of several months of public consultations, which began in April 2024 and included community conversations and online surveys. Feedback from these consultations will directly contribute to shaping the 10-Year Action Plan, which is expected to be presented to Toronto City Council in 2025.

During the event, attendees were invited to share their perspectives on issues affecting Black communities in Toronto, including barriers in health care, education, employment, and policing. The feedback collected at the Town Hall will be used to refine the plan, ensuring it meets the needs of the city’s diverse Black population.

The renewed 10-Year Action Plan builds on the successes and lessons learned from the city’s inaugural Five-Year Action Plan to Confront Anti-Black Racism. This previous plan made important strides in raising awareness and addressing racial inequities within city services, but city leaders and residents alike agree that more work remains to be done.

Toronto, known for its diversity, is home to over three million people, including many from the African diaspora. Despite its reputation as a multicultural hub, systemic barriers persist for Black residents, which the city aims to address through this ongoing initiative.

For residents who were unable to attend, the City of Toronto continues to accept feedback via its online platform. The public’s input is crucial to ensuring the final 10-Year Action Plan effectively addresses the issues that matter most to the community.
